About Gibshiel

Quiet, stunning location, peaceful and lovingly restored and renovated

Switch off ‘off-grid’

Staying at Gibshiel is a unique experience. Both a fantastic B&B retreat and a working hill farm, its off-grid location in the heart of the rolling Northumberland National Park is simply stunning. The gardens and farm total 102 acres and are the perfect setting to switch off for a few days and get back to nature with amazing views at every turn.

Accommodation is based in the homely farmhouse, which has been completely modernised, featuring three spacious guest-rooms all with ensuite facilities. There is a double and a twin on the first floor and a double, fully accessible to wheelchair users, on the ground floor.

The shepherd’s hut

In addition to the ‘conventional’ farmhouse bedrooms, a self-contained shepherd’s hut is also available. Built by Stuart for him and Alex to live in while the renovations to the main house were undertaken, the hut comprises an empress size bed, ensuite shower room and a fully equipped kitchen – including a hob and microwave combi oven. The hut is located within the large, lambing shed (no livestock!) close to the farmhouse.

A-rated & eco-friendly

The farmhouse renovations have been an eco-lead initiative from start to finish, an accomplishment recognised through the award of a sought-after EPC A-rating.

Gibshiel is largely self-sufficient and runs on solar and wind power (plus a back-up generator when needed), drawing fresh water deep underground from its own spring.

Heart of the Northumberland National Park & Dark Skies Park

Conveniently situated on the Pennine Way ten miles from the small historic market town of Bellingham and seven miles from the village of Byrness, Gibshiel is the perfect countryside stopover for walkers and cyclists – complete with its own drying room and washing machine for wet boots and clothes.

For guests arriving by car there is plenty of parking and for cyclists there is secure bike storage (and cleaning facilities!!).

Local and regional attractions are all within easy reach. Bicycle trails/routes to the north of the farm offer access to Kielder and Scotland. The A68 is located approximately five miles up the road offering good road access to Hexham, Newcastle, Edinburgh amongst others.

Newcastle Airport is approximately 40 minutes away. The coastal towns lie approximately 50 minutes to an hour away. Tarset Valley Taxis provide a friendly and efficient service for local trips and airport/railway transfers.
